Mike's Service Record 1962. Enlisted into 1st Royal Tank Regiment on an S Type engagement to fulfil my father's wish that I experience the basic training of those soldiers I would later have the privilege to command. 1963. The first officer commissioned into the newly formed Royal Warwickshire Fusiliers on a Short Service Commission. Served as a rifle platoon commander in Hameln, BAOR. 1965. Fusilier Brigade Depot, Sutton Coldfield. 1966. Joined 1st Battalion XX The Lancashire Fusiliers in Weeton as a rifle platoon commander in D Company with Pete Lander as platoon sergeant. 1967. Reformed the Anti Tank Platoon in Weeton with 'Chopper' Essex as Platoon Sergeant. 1968. Initially Battalion Anti Tank Officer in Erskine Camp, Kowloon, Hong Kong, with John O'Grady as Platoon Sergeant, then a spell as Intelligence Officer and finally as Reconnaissance Platoon Commander with Joe Eastwood as Platoon Sergeant. 1st Battalion XX The Lancashire Fusiliers became 4th Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers on St George's Day 1968. 1969. Joined 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers in Berlin with the draft from the 4th Battalion after our removal from the Army ORBAT. Initially, Training Adjutant and then Second in Command of Support Company 1971. Press Officer with the 2nd Battalion in Catterick and Belfast 1972. Grade 3 Staff Officer with Headquarters 20th Armoured Brigade in Detmold, BAOR. 1974. Squadron Leader with 9th/12th Royal Lancers (Prince of Wales's) in Detmold and South Armagh. 1976. Training Major with the Duke of Lancaster's Own Yeomanry in Clifton, Manchester. 1978. Second in Command of the UNFICYP Support Regiment in Nicosia, Cyprus. 1980. Grade 2 Project Manager in Headquarters United Kingdom Land Forces, Wilton, Salisbury, Wiltshire. Retired on 31 December 1980. |
