2nd Bn the XX The Lancashire Fusiliers

Trieste
1953-1955

Do you know who this is it was taken at a party in Via Rossetti, Barracks Trieste, Christmas 1953. Mihail Alexandrov on the shoulders
of a British soldier of the 2nd Lancashire Fusiliers. The Christmas activities promoted by the two Allied garrisons were always highly appreciated. According to a report by the voluntary agencies WCC and YMCA/YWCA, in 1953 “the military population in Trieste […] gave many parties. And
they really were parties, complete with Christmas tree, Santa Claus, party games and films, enormous teas of “pop”, ice cream and cakes, or in some cases turkey dinners”
Mihail Alexandrov who is on the shoulders of the LF is the Brother of George Alexandrov who is in contact with us and is trying to find this Soldier and has also sent this PDF about The history of the Risiera di San Sabba "as well as other DP camps in Trieste."

This first batch were taken on a company exercise in May 1954.
The purpose of the exercise was primarily to improve the general fitness of the Company before going to
Austria for about four weeks on the field firing range - at 6000 feet. Apparently, the previous year (before my time)
there was an embarrassing lack of fitness - hence the effort to improve things.
The exercise was primarily a three day march along the backroads and through the villages.
Every time we came to a hill we left the road and went up it. The process worked.
When we went to Austria a few weeks later we marched 9 miles uphill and marched into camp with the band playing in fine style.

A couple of personalities from 2LF:
Doc Young I believe was a National Service doctor and definitely a Scot.

John Campbell - I believe this was likely the same "Mad Campbell"
I have come across reference to. The moniker certaily fits!
In Trieste he used to operate a Lambretta motor scooter at high speed down narrow streets.
I can't believe that I was naive enough to ride pillion!

St. Veit: we camped overnight at a sportsground in St. Veit on our way to the field firing camp.
(I can't remember the name of the camp - I wonder if anyone else does?)

Austria: Marching into camp with band playing etc.

Thanks for these great photos Jerry looking forwards to the next batch

Stories From Trieste

Neil (Danny) Kay
What to do with a Brasso tin when Empty

Danny showed me up the guard watch tower at Montebello ammo dump is planted firmly in my memory.
It is safe to say Danny was called the "mad bomber"and was renowned for his
Brasso Tin grenades
. Saying if they come now we are ready for them.
The fact that he was "notorious" just
added to the flavour.
