"Kohima War Cemetery"

KOHIMA WAR CEMETERY
Country: India
Locality: unspecified
Visiting Information: The cemetery is completely terraced with terrace levels ranging from 3 - 5 metres high, which makes wheelchair access to this site impossible. The Cemetery is only open to the public while staff are on duty, and is normally closed on Sundays. The residential Group Supervisor's bungalow is situated on the roadside by the service entrance a short distance left of the main entrance, and the register of the graves is usually kept at his bungalow.
Location Information: Kohima, the capital city of Nagaland state, is some 200 kilometres from the Indo-Burmese border (now known as the Indo-Myanmar border). Kohima is best reached by air from Calcutta to Dimapur or from Delhi to Dimapur via Gauhati in Assam State and then by a winding road up the mountains. Kohima is 74 kilometres from Dimapur. It can also be reached by road from Gauhati - a long and difficult journey. An inner line permit is required to visit Nagaland and sometimes special permission needs to be obtained from the State Governor. Kohima War Cemetery is situated on the left of the Imphal-Diampur road (Highway 39) close to the centre of the town.
Historical Information: The Japanese advance into India was halted at Kohima in April 1944 and Garrison Hill, a long wooded spur on a high ridge west of the village, was the scene of perhaps the most bitter fighting of the whole Burma campaign when a small Commonwealth force held out against repeated attacks by a Japanese Division. The fiercest hand to hand fighting took place in the garden of the Deputy Commissioner's bungalow, around the tennis court, but the heaviest casualties on both sides occurred after relieving forces reached the Garrison and the Japanese were driven off the ridge, so re-opening the road to Imphal. KOHIMA WAR CEMETERY lies on the battle ground of Garrison Hill. No trace remains of the bungalow, which was destroyed in the fighting, but white concrete lines mark and preserve permanently the historic tennis court. The cemetery now contains 1,420 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War. At the highest point in the cemetery stands the KOHIMA CREMATION MEMORIAL commemorating 917 Hindu and Sikh soldiers whose remains were cremated in accordance with their faith. At the lower end of the cemetery, near the entrance, is a memorial to the 2nd Division. It bears the inscription;- "When you go home Tell them of us and say, For your tomorrow, We gave our today." The cemetery also contains a memorial to the 2nd Battalion, the Dorsetshire Regiment and a number of other regimental memorials have been erected on and near Garrison Hill.

RANGOON WAR CEMETERY

Rangoon War Cemetery was first used as a burial ground immediately following the recapture of Rangoon in May 1945. Later, the Army Graves Service moved in graves from several burial sites in and around Rangoon, including those of the men who died in Rangoon Jail as prisoners of war.

There are now 1,381 Commonwealth servicemen of the Second World War buried or commemorated in this cemetery. 86 of the burials are unidentified and there are special memorials to more than 60 casualties whose graves could not be precisely located.

In 1948, the graves of 36 Commonwealth servicemen who died in Rangoon during the First World War were moved into this cemetery, 35 of them from Rangoon Cantonment Cemetery and one from Rangoon (Pazundaung) Town Cemetery.

The cemetery is situated between Myienegone and Manthawaddy roundabout (close to the circle) and at the back of Burma Translation Society (Sarbaybeikmann).

The entrance to the cemetery is down a lane facing east along PYI road (formerly Prome Road) some 8 kilometres from the port, 12 kilometres from the airport and 5 kilometres from the main railway station. There is no road direction sign to the cemetery, but Monasteries surround the cemetery on three sides.

A caretaker resides on site and the cemetery gates are open between 8am and 5 pm.

Wheelchair access to this cemetery is possible via the main entrance. For further information regarding wheelchair access, please contact our Enquiries Section on 01628 507200.

TAUKKYAN WAR CEMETERY

TAUKKYAN WAR CEMETERY is the largest of the three war cemeteries in Burma (now Myanmar). It was begun in 1951 for the reception of graves from four battlefield cemeteries at Akyab, Mandalay, Meiktila and Sahmaw which were difficult to access and could not be maintained. The last was an original 'Chindit' cemetery containing many of those who died in the battle for Myitkyina. The graves have been grouped together at Taukkyan to preserve the individuality of these battlefield cemeteries

Burials were also transferred from civil and cantonment cemeteries, and from a number of isolated jungle and roadside sites. Because of prolonged post-war unrest, considerable delay occurred before the Army Graves Service were able to complete their work, and in the meantime many such graves had disappeared. However, when the task was resumed, several hundred more graves were retrieved from scattered positions throughout the country and brought together here.

The cemetery now contains 6,374 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War, 867 of them unidentified.

In the 1950s, the graves of 52 Commonwealth servicemen of the First World War were brought into the cemetery from the following cemeteries where permanent maintenance was not possible: Henzada (1); Meiktila Cantonment (8); Thayetmyo New (5); Thamakan (4); Mandalay Military (12) and Maymyo Cantonment (22).

Taukkyan War Cemetery also contains

The RANGOON MEMORIAL, which bears the names of almost 27,000 men of the Commonwealth land forces who died during the campaigns in Burma and who have no known grave.

The TAUKKYAN CREMATION MEMORIAL commemorating more than 1,000 Second World War casualties whose remains were cremated in accordance with their faith.

The TAUKKYAN MEMORIAL which commemorates 45 servicemen of both wars who died and were buried elsewhere in Burma but whose graves could not be maintained.

Taukkyan War Cemetery is outside Yangon (formerly Rangoon), near the airport and immediately adjoining the village of Taukkyan. It is on PY1 road (formerly Prome Road), about 35 kilometres north of the city from which it is easily accessible.

Wheelchair access to the site is possible, but may be via an alternative entrance. For further information regarding wheelchair access, please contact our Enquiries Section on 01628 507200.

TAUKKYAN WAR CEMETERY
Country: Myanmar
Locality: unspecified
Visiting Information: Wheelchair access to the site is possible, but may be via an alternative entrance. For further information regarding wheelchair access, please contact our Enquiries Section on 01628 507200.
Location Information: Taukkyan War Cemetery adjoins the village of Taukkyan which is about 35 kilometres north of Yangon (formerly Rangoon). It is on PY1 road (formerly Prome road), about 15 kilometres from the airport and can be easily seen from the road.
Historical Information: TAUKKYAN WAR CEMETERY is the largest of the three war cemeteries in Burma (now Myanmar). The graves have been grouped together at Taukkyan to preserve the individuality of these battlefield cemeteries Burials were also transferred from civil and cantonment cemeteries, and from a number of isolated jungle and roadside sites. Taukkyan War Cemetery also contains: The RANGOON MEMORIAL, which bears the names of almost 27,000 men of the Commonwealth land forces who died during the campaigns in Burma and who have no known grave.

"MAYNAMATI WAR CEMETERY"
Bangladesh

: MAYNAMATI WAR CEMETERY
Country: Bangladesh
Locality: unspecified
Visiting Information: Wheelchair access possible via main entrance. For further information regarding wheelchair access, please contact our Enquiries Section on 01628 507200.
Location Information: Maynamati is some 7 kilometres from the centre of Comilla, which is on the railway line linking Dhaka to Chittagong. It can be reached by train to Comilla railway station, 9 kilometres from the cemetery, or by the Dhaka - Chittagong highway. The cemetery is 1 kilometre down the road leading from Comilla to Sylinet and a short distance past the Cantonment Military Hospital. There is a C.W.G.C. road direction sign on a roundabout at the crossroad.
Historical Information: Before the war Maynamati was a hamlet of a few dozen huts, but during the war a large military camp was established there. Several ordnance depots and a number of military hospitals, both British and Indian, were in the area, including Nos. 14 and 150 British General Hospitals; and the majority of the burials in Maynamati War Cemetery were from the various hospitals. Graves from isolated places in the surrounding country, and some from as far afield as Burma, were moved into the cemetery by the Army Graves Service and later on by the Commission; and it was found necessary to transfer also graves from small cemeteries at Dacca, Faridpur, Paksay, Saidpur, Santahan and Sirajgany, where they could not be maintained. The cemetery was started by the Army and laid out by the garrison engineer. It is dominated by a small flat-topped hill crowned with indigenous flowering and evergreen trees. Between the entrance and this hill lie the Christian graves, and on the far side of it are the Muslim graves. On a terrace about half-way up the hill, facing the entrance, stands the Cross of Sacrifice, and on the other side a shelter looks over the Muslim graves to a tree-framed view of the countryside beyond. There are now over 700, 1939-45 war casualties commemorated in this cemetery.

Location Information: Proceed to Delhi Cantonement by taking the Ring Road in the direction of Nariana from Dhaula Kuan multi-level crossing and continue for 3 km to reach Brar Square traffic junction. There are roadside boards on both sides of this junction. Take a right turn over the railway crossing and after apprximately 1km, you will find the cemetery on the right hand side of the road.
Historical Information: Delhi War Cemetery was created in 1951 when graves from many cemeteries in northern India were moved into the site to ensure their permanent maintenance. Among them are graves from cantonment cemeteries in Allahabad, Cawnpore, Dehra Dun and Lucknow. There are now 1,022 Commonwealth casualties of the Second World War buried, or commemorated by special memorial, in this cemetery together with a number of war graves of other nationalities, mostly Dutch. In 1966, 99 First World War burials were moved into the cemetery from Nicholson Cemetery, Kashmir Gate, Delhi, so that their permanent maintenance could be assured. A special memorial commemorates one casualty whose grave remains in Nicholson Cemetery. Delhi War Cemetery also contains the DELHI 1914-18 MEMORIAL, commemorating 153 casualties buried in Meerut Cantonment Cemetery where their graves could no longer be maintained. More than 25,000 servicemen of the forces of undivided India died during the Second World War in non-operational zones, for example while serving with regimental depots or with other static units. Their remains were accorded the last rites and disposal required by their various religions and their names are commemorated at memorials in the capital cities of India and Pakistan. The DELHI 1939-45 WAR MEMORIAL forms the entrance to Delhi War Cemetery and an identical memorial stands in Karachi War Cemetery. No names appear on the memorials but a Roll of Honour at each site, one in Hindi, the other in Urdu, record the names of those commemorated.

CALCUTTA (BHOWANIPORE) CEMETERY
Country: India
Locality: unspecified
Visiting Information: Wheelchair access to cemetery possible via main entrance. For further information regarding wheelchair access, please contact our Enquiries Section on telephone number 01628 507200.
Location Information: Bhowanipore Cemetery is 1 km from the southern end of the Calcutta Maiden and is enclosed by a high wall. The war plot is at the rear of the civilian cemetery, some 200 metres from the main entrance. The cemetery is at no 15 Debendra Lal Khan Road, Calcutta 700027.
Historical Information: This civil cemetery has been in use since 1864, many of the earlier burials of service personnel and their dependants being made from the nearby garrison at Fort William, from which the cemetery initially took its name. During the Second World War, various establishments important to the war effort were posted to Calcutta and No 47 General Hospital was there from January 1943 to the beginning of February 1945. Originally, the graves were in denominational plots throughout the cemetery, war graves and civilian graves indiscriminately mingled. In 1954, the church authorities decided that it would be necessary to clear certain plots and the outlying war graves were moved by the Commission into the area with the largest number of war burials. This now forms a separate service section containing the graves of both world wars. Calcutta (Bhowanipore) Cemetery contains 95 Commonwealth burials of the First World War, including one brought in from Fort Chingrikhali Cemetery in 1934. Second World War burials number 617. The Commission also has responsibility for the care of 187 non-war burials in the cemetery.

Kirkee War Cemetery India
On the banks of the Mula river in Pune there is a World War Cemetery known as the Kirkee War Cemetery.

It is dedicated to the soldiers who lost their lives in the western and central parts of India in the second World War.

It also commemorates about 1800 servicemen who died in India during the first World War. They were earlier buried in cantonment cemeteries in India and Pakistan, but their final resting place was later shifted to Kirkee, Pune.

The funding of this grave comes from the War Graves Commission and as can be seen from the photograph it is beautifully maintained.

York & Lancaster’s, Royal Field Artillery, Royal Army Medical Corps and Royal Engineers are some of the units from which the names are seen on the tombs here.

One thing worth noting is that all the grave stones are facing the central stone of remembrance.

While standing there, one has to just close the eyes and you almost hear each one of them standing erect in a row shouting out their names and rank.

The banks on either side of these steps are clothed with ornamental and flowering shrubs and the avenue leading to the Cross of sacrifice are formed by Peltophorum trees which bear beautiful sweetly scented flowers twice a year.

The whole cemetery is under the shade of Gulmohur trees. The headstone borders contain dwarf roses and hybrid tea roses and the whole area, save for the path is turfed.

The total number of burials is 1674 which is well classified with proper indexing in the register. The entry is in such a manner that the first number indicates the plot; the letter, the row; the last number, the grave. Thus 3.C.24 means Plot 3 Row C Grave 24.

Most are British, but there are 151 Indians as well as Americans, Nigerians, other Africans and French.
There are people from all ranks here. Yesudanam Mathew from Velapula Cuddapah, was a sick berth first class attendant in the Royal Indian Navy. He lost his life at the age of 22 in the second world war and his body now rests in the Kirkee War Cemetery.

This was established in 1952 and is maintained by the CWGC (Commonwealth War Graves Commission)

Despite being open to the public, there are very few visitors to the cemetery. Today’s generation may not know that their war heroes rest here.

You will find similar War graves at Alibaug, Deolali, Ahmednagar, Igatpuri, Belgaum, Nagpur and Secunderabad. All these are either fully managed by the CWGC (like the one in Kirkee) or are civil cemeteries partly managed by CWGC.

The Kirkee War Cemetery is managed by five gardeners who work on the guidelines of Simond Fletcher, the CWGC’s horticulture manager in the UK head office.

"When aircraft were lost in Burma, particularly if they caught fire, it was decided that the entire crew and passengers would be buried wherever the majority of them originated.

This was often the USA and we have a number of LFs buried in USA graves.
These are some of them."
