1315 Drum Major John Inger

served with the XXth Foot from 1837 until 1859.

His first 12 years were spent in the rank of drummer, years learning his drumming trade which was to prove very beneficial, so much so that he was selected to be seconded to Osborne House, the Royal residence on the Isle of Wight, where he taught the Prince Arthur, son of Queen Victoria, to be a drummer.

Prince Arthur obviously prospered under his tuition, as he had a fine military career and became Governer of Canada.
