Capt John O'Grady
Michael Riley

Ladies, Gentlemen and life long friends of Michael, it is a great privilege for me to be asked by Mike's family to stand here today and speak about Michael and his time with the Regiment XX The Lancashire Fusiliers.
I first meet Michael in a tented camp in Nicosia Cyprus in 1959, he was then a member of the MT Platoon and enjoyed his time simply because of the warm weather and making of new friends.
Leaving Cyprus in December 1959, the battalion was posted to Osnabruck in North Germany for a four year tour, and it was during this period of service that a group of guys came together and formed a bond of friendship that was to last a life time, and which Michael became fiercely proud of.

His love of sport was very evident through his boxing ability, and of all the time he represented the battalion, I am positive he never lost a bout. His other love was music and he enjoyed nothing better than a good sing-song at the week ends in the N.A.A.F.I. With that other gifted guitarist from Liverpool Smudge Smith 91. Who also left us many years ago.

Michael was selected at that time to become the Commanding Officers driver, who at the time was Lt Col James Wilson, who in later years became Gen Sir James Wilson KBE. M.C., and in a discussion with Gen Jim in his later years, he always asked about the Liverpool lads and in particular Mike Riley, his driver. He said that during his time in Command he enjoyed his conversations with the straight talking L/Clp Riley, and through, Michael's input got a very good insight as to how he should run the battalion and as to what was best for the rank and file. I am certain Michael's friends, present to-day would agree they had some great times.
From Germany the Battalion was posted to Worcestershire, and from there to British Guyana for a nine month tour, looking after the cane fields and then on to Weeton Camp in Blackpool, for Michael's final tour of duty with the Battalion.
Michael leaves behind a family that he was fiercely proud of, and would always remark to me that without family you have nothing and, our yearly get-togethers on Boxing Days at the Wheatsheaf pub, proved that saying to be a very true one.
He loved to parade on remembrance Sunday, and how fitting it was that the last parade was in his beloved City of Liverpool. A solid member of the Liverpool Branch, Michael will not be forgotten, but will be remembered for what is, in my opinion the highest compliment any one can pay any man, and that is,
THIS MAN WAS A NICE PERSON TO HAVE BEEN A FRIEND OF.

John

Stacey,

Your grandfather was a remarkable man and a fiercely loyal Lancashire Fusilier.

We are arranging that he will have placed on his coffin the Lancashire Fusilier flag as a token of the respect and love we had for him.

Dennis Laverick will be attending on Friday and he will be carrying the Lancashire Fusilier Standard.

It may not be possible for me to attend , but there are many of his old friends and comrades who will be there representing the Regiment.

I will be thinking of you all.
