MINDEN 1759
On 1st August 1759 the 20th
(XX) Foot, now part of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, under command
of Prince Ferdinand of Brunswick, met a French army under Marshal Contades
near the village of Minden in the valley of the River Weser, in Hanover,
Germany.
On 31 July Prince Ferdinand
had detached part of his force to a position near the river, thus appearing
to commit a serious military blunder, that is to say, he appeared to
divide his army in the face of the enemy.
The following day Marshal Contades
took the bait decided to attack and on the morning of 1 August initially
easily defeated the scattered portions of Prince Ferdinand's army by
the river; but, to his surprise, he soon discovered the main part of
the Allied army drawn up in battle order ready to meet him.
In the battle that followed
the French Cavalry charged the British infantry six times and each time
they were defeated, and in the end retired in hopeless disorder.
For their bravery and due to
the casualties suffered on this occasion, the 20th (XX) Foot were excused
further duty in the line, but, at their own request, resumed their place
in the line the following day.
