Died on 09/01/1918
Private Edwin Sanderson
1/7th Lancashire Fusiliers.
Private Edwin Sanderson aged 21, of the Lancashire Fusiliers, son of Mr and Mrs A. Sanderson, 9, Reservoir Street, Middleton, died from wounds on January 9th, 1918. He enlisted in November 1915, and had twice previously been wounded with gunshot. He was employed by R. K Lee & Co, and was connected with Holy Trinity Church, Parkfield. The Chaplain wrote to Mrs Sanderson. "You will have heard the sad news of your son's death before you receive this letter, but I am writing to tell you what I know about him. He was brought to this hospital the night before last at about 9 o'clock. He was terribly wounded in the chest and was unconscious. He passed away quietly at 1:15 that night. I went to see him several times but of course he could not speak to me. I saw him for the last time at midnight, and said the prayers for the dying at his bedside. Today I have laid him to rest in our cemetery. I am glad that your boy was spared suffering. May God bless and comfort you and give you strength to bear your cross as bravely as he bore his.
Private Sanderson is laid to rest at Chocques Military Cemetery, France.
